Topeka has a great bevy of entertainment options, which include blossoming arts and music scenes, theatrical performances, restaurants and attractions. Another major avenue for entertainment in Topeka is semi-professional sports.

One such team is the Kansas Koyotes. The Koyotes are an American Professional Football League indoor-football team that plays at the Kansas Expocentre. I’ve been lucky enough to go to almost every Koyotes home game this season, and that’s been a thrill for me. Whether I’m going to shoot photos for the Washburn Review, or just for fun, it’s always entertaining to watch the fast-paced action of indoor-football.

The Koyotes have had a history of dominance in the APFL, as they have been league champions five times in the eight-year history. The team holds open tryouts, and has picked up several talented players from nearby universities including Washburn, Kansas and Kansas State. Washburn’s all-time passing leader, Jordan Brill, is the starting quarterback for the Koyotes. His top receiver, Justin Wrecke, is also a former Ichabod and has a great following of fans, including a group known as the “Wrecke Crew.” See the picture for details.

The Koyotes’ last home game of the season is coming up this Saturday, June 19, at 7:05 p.m. Tickets run from $10-$16 for an adult, or $45 for the VIP section. Children’s tickets go from $5-$8, or $23 for the VIP section. Visit the Koyotes’ website for more information. I encourage everyone, especially those who haven’t been to a game before, to attend the game and cheer on your hometown team. Even if you aren’t from Topeka, come watch the game! It should be a great game, and APFL games are always entertaining. At the very least, you can expect a lot of touchdowns for one team.

If you are a sports fan but aren’t able to come to the Koyotes’ last home game, there are other teams you can follow. The Topeka Golden Giants baseball team will still be playing for another month, and the Topeka RoadRunners NAHL hockey team begins its season in September and continues through April. The Kansas Expocentre will also host the NAHL’s Robertson Cup Championship in the first week of May, 2011.
