Free, family fun launches from Lake Shawnee
Looking for an exciting, awe-inspiring event this week? The 35th Annual Huff’n Puff Hot Air Balloon Rally is set to launch Friday, September 9 at 6 pm at Lake Shawnee.
The sky above Tinman Circle at Lake Shawnee will be the perfect backdrop as nearly 35 hot air balloons are set to take flight this weekend. As a spectator, you get the opportunity to view the hot air balloons launch and land up close and personal. A variety of food and shopping vendors will appease your appetite and keep you entertained.
Schedule of events
Friday, September 9
6 pm: Beginning of balloon launches
7:30 pm: Balloons will inflate and tether to create a glow effect as darkness falls. Tethered balloon rides may be purchased for a $10 donation to Topeka’s Ronald McDonald House.
Saturday, September 10
7 am: Beginning of second flight launch
10 am: Safety seminar for pilots and crews by Westar Enery
1:30- 4:30 pm: Kid’s Balloon Discovery Workshop
6 pm: Beginning of third flight launch window
7:30 pm: Balloons will glow and tether. Balloon rides will be available again for a $10 donation to Topeka’s Ronald McDonald House.
Sunday, September 11
7 am: Beginning of final launch window of all balloons.
This year, a balloon workshop is available for children ages 10 to 12. The workshop explains how hot air balloons work through creating a miniature hot air balloon. The workshop is $30 and will last from 1:30 to 4 pm on Saturday, September 10. You must register through Shawnee County Parks and Recreation. To register, call 267-1156, extension #10.
Huff’n Puff is a Topeka tradition that engages audiences of all ages. As one of the biggest free events of the year, Topekan’s and Kansans alike have come to enjoy this event. Huff’n Puff first started on the Capital building’s lawn downtown and has been held in several locations in Topeka including Washburn University, Felker Park and a field at 22nd and Chelsea. The Huff’n Puff Hot Air Balloon Rally has been held at Lake Shawnee since 1997.
