Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, February 14 and there is still plenty of time to figure out what to get. Topeka has lots to offer the world of love but we have complied a short list of some local Topeka joints to visit to get special gifts for that special someone.

In the great state of Kansas many people find themselves outdoors in the brutal winter weather for sport. A sport that has no time limit, no referees, no coach and more than likely no team. This sport is hunting and Kansans find themselves loving it more and more each year.

For those who love hunting and do it on a regular basis, gathering January 27-29 at The Monster Buck Classic at the Kansas Expocentre will be like a late Christmas. Hunting enthusiasts will be gathering to discuss hunting, equipment and to showcase their bucks.

We are happy, excited, eager and everything in between to announce that Topeka will host the North American Fastpitch Association World Series during August 2012.

More than 120 teams in seven divisions will be in Topeka competing for the 2012 World Series title. NAFA will also be celebrating their 20th anniversary during this tournament. Participants in the tournament will range in ages from 18 to 45.

Alongside hosting their largest tournament yet, 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the NAFA World Series Tournament. In conjunction with the tournament, the 7 Founders of NAFA will be honored and every Hall of Fame Member will be honored that is present at the tournament.

Topeka beat out four other cities who placed bids to host the event for several reasons. Topeka has drawn a lot of interest from NAFA for its historical value, the city’s proximity to the Kansas City International Airport and the quality of fields Topeka has to offer.

The tournaments will be held at Rueger Park, Felker Park and Shawnee North in Topeka. There will be an admission charge for attendees but the public will be encouraged to attend.

NAFA began in Chicago formerly in 1993. This is the first time the World Series tournament will be held in Topeka.

One of the reasons NAFA choose Topeka was because of its historical value. Where would you send NAFA participants to learn about Topeka’s diverse history?

It can be challenging to keep track of changes in our community. It’s easy to miss a new restaurant opening, especially if it’s not on your normal route around town. We keep an updated list of restaurants on our website and print an abridged list in our biannual visitor guide, (not enough room to print them all!)

Take a look at our list of restaurants that have opened or closed since September 2011 and let us know if we missed something! Have you tried one of the new establishments? Let us know how it was in the comments.

The New Year is just around the corner! Ringing in the New Year has been a well-known tradition for many years, maybe even centuries and Topekans do not plan on letting this tradition die as 2011 ends and 2012 begins.

For some Topekans, their plans have been set for months but for all of us last minute planners, there are still several events that you can attend to celebrate.
